About, methodology & FAQ

What is the Fear & Greed Index?

The Fear & Greed Index summarizes market conditions on a scale from 0 to 100: low scores describe a fearful market, high scores a greedy one. This dashboard brings provider indices and our price-based estimates together. Their inputs and methods differ, so compare each index with its own history.

Methodology & data sources

Bitcoin · Alternative.me
We use Alternative.me's published Bitcoin sentiment index. It is typically updated daily and combines signals such as volatility, momentum, volume, social activity and dominance. Its survey component is currently paused.
US stocks · CNN
We display CNN Business's US stock market Fear & Greed Index. It combines seven indicators including momentum, breadth, volatility, options and demand for bonds and safe havens. It is not an S&P 500-only index.
Nasdaq (Our estimate)
We calculate a sentiment estimate from Yahoo Finance daily prices: distance from the 125-day moving average (30%), position in the trailing 252-session high/low range (20%), inverse percentile of 20-session volatility (25%), 14-session RSI (15%), and distance from the 20-day moving average (10%). Scores are normalized to 0–100. Historical scores use the same formula and are published only after all lookback windows are complete. These are our estimates, not official sentiment indices; the weights have not been validated as trading signals.

Frequently asked questions

How often does the data change?

We check sources hourly. Actual changes depend on the provider, trading hours and holidays. Each card shows its own data date; refreshing does not guarantee a new value.

Why do the editions show different markets?

Each language edition leads with a different market selection. Every market still has its own page in all three languages — the links under “Other markets on this site” reach the ones this edition does not feature.

Can I trade using this score alone?

No. Sentiment does not reliably identify turning points. Our estimates are descriptive measures and have not been validated to predict returns.

What score counts as fear, and what counts as greed?

This site reads 0–24 as Extreme Fear, 25–44 as Fear, 45–54 as Neutral, 55–74 as Greed and 75–100 as Extreme Greed. Providers draw their own boundaries, so we display every index on the same five bands to keep them readable side by side.
